There are all sorts of other words to do with food and drink that you must know well - the words for what we use to eat with and also where we put them away in the kitchen.

First of all, it is absolutely essential that you always learn the gender of a word - the der / die / das. We keep saying this, but if you can get this right, you're on your way to getting a good grade!

Secondly, if you are putting things away in the kitchen - for example, if you want to say "put the fork in the drawer", there is the movement of actually opening the drawer and putting in the fork. Therefore, the word for "the" in front of drawer has to be in the accusative case.

Luckily, for die and das there is no change, but der changes to den:

For Example, Put the butter in the fridge = Stell die Butter in den Kühlschrank.

Important rule:

If there is movement, you use the accusative case for where the thing is going.

Thirdly, if you are saying where something is, i.e. no movement, the word for "the" changes again. This time, der, die and das all change, so you need to learn this. This is called the dative case.

For Example, The butter is in the fridge = Die Butter ist in dem Kühlschrank.

Important rule:

If you want to say where something is you use the dative case of where it is.
